Curacao may be a tiny unknown island in the Caribbean and as such, you may not know there are plenty of great activities you can partake in. Because of this, the Curacao Tourism Board has launched a campaign “Right Now in Curaçao”.
In this campaign, they highlight a few of their favorite things to on the island. For example, on the Instagram account, you will find these posts:
To give you a few more ideas here are our nominees for what you could do right now in Curaçao
Take a stroll through the lovely boroughs of Curaçao
Willemstad is the colorful capital of Curaçao which is divided into two parts by the Annabaai. The old parts of Punda and Otrabanda are being lovingly restored piece by piece and it’s an amazing contrast, which creates stunning photographs.
Take a stroll through Pietermaai and while you are there pick a restaurant you want to dine at tonight. Scharloo has recently been overhauled and featured many beautiful murals now. You won’t want to miss that.
If you’d rather explore these areas with an expert guide you can book tours through Otrabanda and Scharloo with Dushi Walks Curaçao. Read Karlijn’s post about her experience with them here.
Visit the oldest synagogue in the Americas
Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue is the eldest running synagogue in the Americas as it has been in use since 1732. The pastel yellow neoclassical building has a very distinctive feature, a sand floor. Which is a reminder of the congregants’ ancestors who were secret Jews and had to muffle the sounds of their worship.
Explore the island by car or jeep safari
Curacao is a gorgeous island with a lot of great nature parks, such as Christoffel Park with the highest mountain of the island and Shete Boka. On Shete Boka you will think you are on another planet with the sea smashing into the porous and crater-like cliffs.
While you are on Banda Abou, you may want to visit Jaanchi’s at Westpunt to have a lovely local meal. If you are brave enough you might even try the iguana. Afterwards, drive on to Kenepa Grandi or Cas Abou to finish the day at the beach.
Go Beach Hopping
On a bounty island in the Caribbean, you will find beaches at every turn. Curaçao is no different. Some of the best beaches and bays are Kenepa Grandi, Porto Mari, Cas Abou, Lagun, Blue Bay, Seaquarium Beach and Jan Thiel. Each beach has a slightly different view and a different vibe.
Eat your fill
Curaçao is full of great restaurants, from higher-end dining options at Le Clochard, De Gouverneur or By Blauw to lunching with the locals at Plasa Bieuw or at a food truck. And anything in between. Make sure you get at least one batido. These frozen drinks are amazing smoothies, you will not want to miss. The best one is near Brion Plein in Otrabanda.
Of course there are plenty of excursions to book too. Think of swimming with dolphins, sailing tours, snorkeling trips and paddle boarding. Check out this website for more ideas.
